Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Ontario: Asbestos, Process and What to Expect

·Niagara Painting Company

Popcorn, or stipple, ceilings were standard in Ontario homes for decades. Today most homeowners want smooth ceilings, and removing the texture is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. Before anyone starts scraping, though, there is an important first step.

Test for Asbestos First

Some textured ceiling products contained asbestos, and ceilings applied before about 1990 may include it. Asbestos is harmless when left undisturbed, but scraping it releases fibres that are dangerous to breathe.

The only way to know is to have a small sample tested by a qualified lab. If the result is positive, removal must be handled by an asbestos abatement contractor following Ontario's regulations. If it comes back clear, a painting contractor can proceed.

Scraping vs. Skim-Coating

Scraping: Unpainted popcorn texture can usually be wetted and scraped off. The ceiling underneath then needs joint repairs, a skim coat and sanding to become truly smooth.

Skim-coating over: If the texture has been painted, it is hard to wet and scrape. In that case, it is often better to apply skim coats of compound over the texture to create a flat surface.

What to Expect on the Day

Popcorn ceiling removal is messy. A good contractor seals the room with plastic, covers floors and walls, and removes or covers light fixtures. Expect a typical room to take two to three days, because compound needs drying time between coats before sanding, priming and painting.

Finishing

Once smooth, the ceiling is primed and painted, usually in a flat white that hides minor imperfections. Bright, smooth ceilings make rooms feel larger and more modern.

Planning Tip

If you are adding pot lights, have a licensed electrician install them before the ceiling is finished so patches can be blended in during the same job.
