Popcorn Ceiling Removal Across Niagara Region

Popcorn and stipple ceilings make rooms look dated, collect dust and are hard to repair. Removing them and finishing the ceiling smooth is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to an older home.

Textured ceilings installed before about 1990 can contain asbestos, so in older homes we recommend testing a sample before any scraping. If the test comes back positive, removal must be done by an asbestos abatement contractor under Ontario rules; if it is clear, we proceed.

Our process is to seal off the room, protect floors and walls with plastic, wet and scrape the texture, then skim-coat and sand the ceiling smooth. Where scraping would damage the drywall, or the ceiling is painted over, we skim-coat over the texture instead. The ceiling is then primed and painted flat white or your choice of colour.

We provide popcorn ceiling removal across Niagara Region, including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Grimsby, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie. Call (647) 797-9471 for a free estimate.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal questions

Popcorn Ceiling Removal FAQs

Common questions about popcorn ceiling removal.

Does my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?+
It might if it was applied before about 1990. The only way to know is to have a sample tested by a lab. We recommend testing before removal in older homes.
How messy is popcorn ceiling removal?+
It is messy, which is why we seal the room with plastic, protect floors and walls, and clean up completely at the end.
How long does it take?+
A typical room takes two to three days including scraping, skim-coating, drying, sanding, priming and painting.
What if my popcorn ceiling has been painted?+
Painted texture is hard to scrape. In that case we usually skim-coat over it to create a smooth surface.
Can you add pot lights at the same time?+
Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. If you are adding pot lights, have them installed before we finish the ceiling and we will patch around them.
